Communities in Schools (CIS) surround students with a community of supporters across the United States, including Chicago. They work with schools in two distinct ways: their Partnership Program and their Intensive Program. In their Partnership Program they work with 175 schools to connect them to community-based organizations depending on their stated need, focused on behavior and mental health, college and career readiness, health and wellness and art enrichment. The Intensive Program embeds a master’s level professional in communities to provide supportive guidance, goal-setting, and other interventions to targeted students who are off-track in their attendance, behavior, and grades. Their Freshman Rising program support students transitioning from an Intensive Program in to high school in an effort to ease the transition from 8th to 9th grade.
